City Council tries to eliminate wheelchair use on new track with ordinance

December 07, 2005

It’s amazing how city officials would even consider passing an ordinance that would discriminate against people with disabilities. After working as an advocate for over 20 years, it’s unfortunate that Mayor Pollard and the City Council continued with this decision to prevent wheelchair-bound individuals from using the newly constructed high school track.

I took the initiative to contact Chairman Hennessy and express my displeasure regarding their discriminatory ordinance. I am confident that both he and the Mayor will take note of our concerns and take the necessary steps towards ensuring that everyone in the community has equal access to public facilities.

Finally, I’ve attached the minutes of the December 05, 2005 meeting so you can read for yourself and make your own conclusion.

I’ve included the minutes of the December 05, 2005 meeting.  You can read for yourselves from page 10 to 13.

What’s quite disturbing is the fact that the ordinance failed a motion to table and look who voted against tabling it.

Click here to read the minutes.  Interesting read and clearly explains the ignorance this city holds in creating an accessible community.
