The picture above is only a depiction of the “what if” scenario that can occur when common sense is not used during the planning stages of creating an accessible feature. I applaud the school for installing a ramp off Pleasant View Street; however, some type of guardrail or handrail should have also been considered to prevent anyone from accidentally going over the side.
While the ramp itself appears to be compliant, an added barrier would help ensure the safety of individuals who may be physically vulnerable or unsteady on their feet.
The city appears to lack personnel responsible for ensuring that projects are both safe and fully accessible. City leadership is often one of the reasons why individuals with disabilities — especially those with firsthand knowledge of accessibility requirements — are not included in the planning, review, and oversight of projects throughout the city. Their participation and input could help prevent oversights like this and promote safer, more inclusive public spaces for everyone.
